Bridgeport Pays $1.49 Million Settlement For Broken Traffic Light

The city of Bridgeport has agreed to pay $1.49 million to the family of a city resident who was severely injured when he was hit by a car that went through a malfunctioning traffic light, according to the Connecticut Post.

Both City Attorney R. Christopher Meyer and Donald Papcsy, who represented the injured man, Henry Cartagena, called the settlement fair.

“It’s a modest settlement that we are paying, substantially below what a judge valued it to be considering the plaintiff’s catastrophic injuries,” Meyer said in this article.

Meyer said the plaintiff’s family received a check for $316,000 with the remainder to be paid over the next six years.

Witnesses said the traffic light at the intersection had been malfunctioning for three days before the crash and the city knew it was malfunctioning, according to the Poet.
